Allergic kiss of death
7 February 2008
Be careful who you kiss.
A 20 year old woman was walked home by her boyfriend one night from the restaurant where they both worked. Their goodbye kiss was passionate and and literally took her breath away.
She had known about her seafood allergies for some time but despite that, had taken a job as a waitress in a seafood restaurant. The kiss of her boyfriend (who had been eating shrimp less than an hour earlier) was the trigger that pushed her allergy into overdrive.
She was rushed to hospital with swelling of the lips and throat (which made breathing difficult), nausea, redness and abdominal cramps. The symptoms started less than a minute after the kiss.
The hospital administered oxygen and adrenaline which brought her symptoms back under control.
She promised to look for a new job, we don't know whether she was going to look for a new boyfriend too.
